SÜDPACK introduced something last week that should matter to anyone running a coffee packaging line.

The company launched CarbonLite PurePP, a mono-material polypropylene film designed to replace conventional PET/aluminum/PE laminates. The pitch is straightforward: barrier performance against oxygen, moisture, and UV. Processing on existing VFFS equipment. A reported 43% reduction in carbon footprint compared to a standard 100-micron PET/AL/PE structure.

But there's a detail buried in the announcement that deserves more attention than it's getting. The film is designed so that PP-based degassing valves can be heat-sealed directly into the pack. SÜDPACK explicitly says this helps "maintain material compatibility across the complete packaging format."

That's a signal. The mono-PP wave isn't just about the film. It's about every component that touches the film. And the valve is the component most likely to get overlooked until something goes wrong on the line.

What Mono-PP Actually Changes for Your PP Degassing Valve

If you're running a conventional PET/AL/PE coffee bag, your valve is probably a PE or HDPE housing with a PET or silicone membrane. That combination has worked for years. It's mature, reliable, and well-understood.

Mono-PP changes the material logic. If the bag is PP-based and you're pursuing recyclability or PPWR compliance, a PE valve housing introduces a material mismatch. It's not necessarily a dealbreaker—regulations vary, and certification bodies assess components differently—but it's a conversation your customers are increasingly having with their packaging suppliers.

A PP housing, paired with a PP-based film, keeps the material stream cleaner. That's why SÜDPACK is explicitly calling out PP valve compatibility. They're not doing it as a courtesy. They're doing it because the valve is part of the packaging system, and the system only works if the components match.

The valve market data backs this up. Coffee packaging accounts for roughly 74.9% of flexible bag degassing valve applications, and the Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing segment, driven by domestic technical upgrades and capacity expansion. As mono-material formats spread, the demand for matching PP degassing valves will follow.

The Valve Applicator Question Nobody's Asking Yet

Here's where the conversation usually stops: "Use a PP valve with a PP bag." Problem solved, right?

Not quite. The PP degassing valve has to be attached to the bag. And mono-PP film behaves differently under heat than the laminates your valve applicator was probably set up for.

PP films tend to have a narrower thermal processing window than aluminum foil laminates. They're softer, they deform more readily, and they're less forgiving of temperature overshoot. If your valve applicator is running the same seal parameters you used for a 120-micron PET/AL/PE structure, you're likely to see one of three things: localized melting around the valve seat, film distortion that prevents the membrane from sealing flat, or inconsistent bond strength across a batch.

A seal jaw temperature deviation of just ±5°C can drop heat seal strength below the 3 N/15mm minimum for nitrogen-flushed coffee pouches. On a thick laminate, that might be within tolerance. On a thin mono-PP film, it can mean the difference between a sealed bag and a leaker.

What to Check Before You Switch to PP Degassing Valves

If you're evaluating a mono-PP transition—whether driven by PPWR, customer pressure, or cost—here's where to start.

Re-qualify your seal parameters. The temperature, pressure, and dwell time that worked for your old film are a baseline, not a specification. Run a peel test at the new settings and confirm you're above the minimum seal strength for your film structure.

Check the valve seat after sealing. Look for warping, lifting, or discoloration at the edges of the valve base. If the seal area looks uneven, the film is telling you the heat distribution isn't uniform.

Measure opening pressure on finished bags. Not the spec sheet number—the actual measured value. If the PP degassing valve opens outside your specified range, something in the sealing process is interfering with the membrane.

Confirm your valve housing material matches the film. A PP valve on a PP film is a cleaner material story than a PE valve on a PP film. If your customer is pursuing recyclability certification, this is the first question they'll ask.

Where We Fit In

We supply PP housing valves alongside our PE and HDPE options. The same one-way degassing valve platform—22.5mm and 20.1mm diameters, PET or silicone membrane, opening pressure ranges of 2.3–5.5 mbar or 3–10 mbar, with or without filter—is available with PP housings for mono-PP applications.

On the equipment side, our DVP series valve applicators are built around the kind of parameter control that mono-material films demand.

The heat press module holds ±1°C, adjustable from 50°C to 300°C. On a thin PP film, that precision is what lets you re-qualify parameters when you switch film suppliers without guessing where the seal window is.

Valve-to-bag alignment holds ≤0.1mm, using precision servo drive with linear guide rail positioning. On a mono-material film, a PP degassing valve that sits even slightly off-center produces uneven pressure around the valve base. Uneven pressure means inconsistent bond strength—the failure mode where some valves in a batch pass the pull test and others don't.

The DVP-5 semi-automatic model handles bag lengths from 120mm to 600mm and widths from 70mm to 400mm, with output of 10–15 bags per minute. It's the machine for sample runs and R&D work on new film structures. If you're evaluating whether a mono-PP bag and a PP degassing valve will work on your line before committing to a full production run, this is where you start.

The DVP-1200 and DVP-2000 automatic models cover higher-volume production, with output of 20–25 and 36–40 bags per minute respectively.

A Practical Path Forward

Mono-PP is coming. The PPWR timeline and the pace of film development make that clear. But the transition doesn't have to be a leap of faith.

If you're evaluating a switch to PP degassing valves and mono-PP film, the cheapest way to find out whether your valve and valve applicator setup can handle it is to test. We can send you PP valve samples to run on your own line, with your own film and your own coffee. You'll get measured data on seal strength, opening pressure, and closing pressure under your actual production conditions. If the numbers don't meet your specification, we'll tell you that too, and we'll work through what needs to change.

The bag is changing. The PP degassing valve and the valve applicator that attaches it need to change with it.
